Things that Matter

Our text will come from Matthew 23:23. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

In our text the Lord Jesus has been preaching to the religious crowd of his time. He tells them they are doing things that they ought to be doing but have omitted the more important things of life.

That is, there are things you are supposed to do but there are other things much more important that you should be doing that really matter, here and in eternity.

Notice our text. The things that really matter.
The Law—In Christ time it was what God commanded them to do in the O.T. All those “Thou shalt nots.” Are you doing what the Lord has commanded you to do in his word? It might be a good idea to find out what his word says. This is something that matters. As the law even today states; ignorance is no excuse.

Judgment—There are things everyday that you have to decide what to do and what not to do. You make judgments all day long. What to wear, what to say, what to do, and etc. Have you decided to get saved yet? Whatever you do, don’t leave this thing undone. This is the most important thing in this life that you can do. This is what really matters. It is the difference between Heaven and Hell.

Mercy—It seems to be in our nature not to have mercy others, but God had mercy on us in that he sent his only Son into the world to pay for our sins. Remember, we were enemies of God and ungodly in his sight. Shouldn’t we have mercy on others as he did for us? If you want God to have mercy on you at “the Judgment” you should have mercy on others including you family. It may not seem like it matters now but out in eternity; it will be all that matters.

May God help you to do the things that matters.
