A Sad Truth

Our text today is from 1st Corinthians 3:11. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

The holidays should be one of the most joyous times of the year and yet for many it is the most dreaded and difficult time of the year. I realize the holidays are difficult for some because there maybe someone missing this year for the first time. My heart goes out for them. I went through that when I lost my mom a few years ago.

Each year many get drunk, and doped up during the holidays because of the tremendous debt they run up and then January comes and the bills start coming in.

I understand there are more suicides at this time of year than any other time due to alcohol, drug use or abuse, debts incurred, loneliness, and no knowledge of the true meaning of the holidays. Because of that, there is a big let down after the holidays.  Many can’t deal with that.  The holidays for some are just empty and meaningless. That is the sad truth.

You can’t enjoy something that you don’t know what it’s about especially after it’s all over. There is nothing left and you are stressed, exhausted, in debt, lonesome, tired, and wore out. It’s like the air in a balloon has been let out and now depression sets in. Why? Because for some there never was anything solid to stand on and nothing to be joyous about.  Santa Claus is phony, the decorations and lights are put up, the newness wears off the presents, families leave and go back home, your are in debt, and you have to return to your normal routine. Vanity and emptiness. This is the sad truth.

Friend, if you don’t have something underneath all this hoop-la that will stabilize you then you are in for a let down after it is all said and done. Jesus Christ is the reason for the season and if you by-pass him then you are in for just another party that is meaningless and depression may set in. A sad truth.

May God help you to know that Jesus is the true reason for the season and don’t forget him through the holidays. He is worth celebrating because he is for real. Santa Claus is a phony.

The song The Solid Rock says,
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

When darkness veils His lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace.
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil.

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand
All other ground is sinking sand.
All other ground is sinking sand.

His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood.
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my Hope and Stay.
Remember this when the holidays come and go. It will help you and it will sustain you.
