A Spiritual Need

My text today if from– John 4:13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Years ago my dad saw a need for his family as well for himself that was more than just a physical need.  It was a spiritual need.  And just as our physical bodies have physical needs our spirit has spiritual needs.  Spiritual needs are just as important and real as physical needs.  My dad recognized that and I’m thankful to God for him seeing that my spiritual needs were met.  Because of that, I was saved.

You see my friend; God made us a tri-part being.  That is, we have a body, soul, and spirit.  And God made us in such a way that we have not only physical needs but spiritual needs. Those spiritual needs can only be filled by Jesus Christ.

Notice our text.  Jesus likens our spiritual needs to being thirsty for water. The water that the world gives quenches thirst only temporarily but the water that Jesus offers quenches your thirst completely. As they used to say, “It’s the real thing”.

There is an area in your heart that only Jesus Christ can fill.  You may try; drugs, sex, alcohol, gambling, making money, but none of those things will satisfy you eternally.  It’s just like when you are really thirsty. Cokes and other sodas won’t quench your thirst. They are phony thirst quenchers.  Some of them will even make you thirstier.  Soda will bloat you but not satisfy your thirst.  When you are really hot and thirsty just plain, good, clear water will do the job.

So if you have a spiritual thirst it will only be quenched through Jesus Christ, otherwise your thirst will never be quenched.

Are you thirsty?  Want a drink?

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.                 Revelation 22:17
